Dodgers, Yankees Dominate MLB Ticket Revenue Race

by Celina

The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees will face off this weekend in a three-game series at Dodger Stadium. This series is a rematch of the 2024 World Series, which the Dodgers won in five games. Both teams are the favorites to win the 2025 World Series, with the Dodgers at +240 odds and the Yankees at +550, according to BetMGM. The matchup also features the league’s reigning MVPs, Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge.

The Dodgers lead Major League Baseball in ticket revenue, just ahead of the Yankees, and they expect strong sales for these three games.

Last year, the Dodgers earned an average of $4.29 million in ticket revenue per regular-season home game. This figure comes from MLB’s internal gate report, shared with Sportico by a non-Dodgers team. The Yankees were close behind, generating $4.11 million per game, a total often boosted by their high ticket prices.

These numbers far exceed those of other teams. The Chicago Cubs earned $3.25 million per game, the Boston Red Sox $2.93 million, and the Houston Astros $2.69 million, rounding out the top five. Meanwhile, teams at the bottom of the league earn about $500,000 per game, highlighting the wide revenue gap in baseball.

For the full season, only the Dodgers and Yankees earned more than $300 million in ticket sales, including premium seating. Both teams also increased their revenue during their World Series runs.

Although the Dodgers lead baseball in attendance, their ticket prices have often kept them just behind the Yankees in total gate revenue. However, the Dodgers’ recent success, including 11 division titles in 12 years and adding Ohtani in 2024, has strengthened their pricing power.

According to the internal report, the Dodgers’ average ticket price was $87 last season. This ranked fourth behind the Yankees ($99), Cubs ($90), and Red Sox ($87). The Astros ($77), New York Mets ($66), and Texas Rangers ($60) followed.

The Dodgers’ average attendance in 2024 was 49,067 per game, nearly 20% higher than the Yankees’ 41,631. This larger crowd helped push the Dodgers to the top of the league’s ticket revenue rankings. Through their first 27 home games this season, the Dodgers are drawing over 50,000 fans per game.

The Dodgers also benefit from a lucrative local TV contract. In 2013, they signed a 25-year deal worth $8.35 billion with what is now Spectrum. The signing of Ohtani boosted ticket revenue and sponsorships, fueling strong growth across the Dodgers’ business. The team’s estimated gross revenue for 2024, including playoffs and before revenue sharing, is $1 billion.

This milestone is rare in sports, previously achieved only by the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and LaLiga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The Dodgers have invested heavily in their roster, which includes three MVPs: Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman. Player costs for this year are expected to reach $500 million, including luxury tax payments. They also owe more than $1 billion in deferred salaries to players like Ohtani, Betts, and Blake Snell.

Currently, the Dodgers are valued at $7.73 billion, including their real estate and related businesses. This value is up 23% from last year and narrows the gap with the Yankees, who are valued at $8.39 billion. According to Sportico’s MLB team valuations, the Dodgers rank seventh among all sports franchises.
