Quarter-Final Showdown: Germany vs Italy

Set in the DAC Arena in Dunajská Streda, the quarter-final brings together two of the most successful nations in youth football.

Germany arrive in top form, having won all three group matches to finish atop Group B. They defeated Slovenia 3-0, Czechia 4-2, and reigning champions England 2-1, scoring a tournament-high nine goals. Forward Nick Woltemade leads the Golden Boot race with four goals, including a rare U21 EURO hat-trick. Under coach Antonio Di Salvo, Germany appear poised for another deep run.

Italy, five-time champions and the most experienced side at this stage with 12 quarter-final appearances, secured second place in Group A. They edged Romania and host Slovakia 1-0 in earlier matches before a 1-1 draw with Spain secured their spot in the knockouts. Carmine Nunziata’s side has impressed defensively, conceding just twice in the group stage.

This is only the third time the two nations have met competitively at U21 level. Each holds one victory. Italy won 1-0 in 2017 thanks to a goal from Federico Bernardeschi, while Germany triumphed 1-0 in the 2009 semi-finals on their way to winning the title.

Their most recent meeting was a friendly in 2022, where Germany won 4-2 in Ancona. Several current players featured in that match, including German scorers Denis Huseinbasic and Kevin Schade. Italy finished with nine men after Giorgio Cittadini and Raoul Bellanova were sent off.
