Oldham Athletic supporters faced a tense bank holiday weekend as they battled long queues both online and outside Boundary Park to secure tickets for the club’s crucial National League play-off final at Wembley Stadium.
The match against Southend United will take place on June 1 at the iconic English football venue in London.
Tickets were first made available to season ticket holders on Saturday, May 24, before going on general sale on Monday, May 26.
By the time of this report, the club confirmed that over 18,000 tickets had been sold.
However, many fans encountered difficulties obtaining tickets in the days leading up to the game.
A ticket cap was initially set at 17,500 per team due to public transport concerns caused by planned engineering works at Wembley Park station. On May 25, this limit was raised by 4,000 to 21,500 tickets per team. Additionally, 9,000 tickets were reserved for those traveling on official coaches.
In response, The Oldham Times and the Southend Echo launched a petition urging the release of more tickets to meet demand.
Supporters also faced technical issues with the online ticketing system during both the season ticket holder and general release sales.
The Oldham Athletic Ticket Office acknowledged on social media (X) on May 24 that some email addresses were not being recognized by the ticket system. The problem was fixed later that day, and the club extended ticket office hours until 10 p.m. to allow more fans to purchase tickets in person at Boundary Park.
Further server problems were reported on May 26, prompting another apology from the club’s ticket office: “We are aware of server issues currently affecting online ticket sales. This is being investigated by our ticketing provider and we are awaiting further updates. We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused.”
Despite these challenges, Oldham Athletic fans have shown determination to support their team in what promises to be a historic match at Wembley.
