Dr. Beatrice Gurwitz to Discuss Jewish Heritage and Cultural Interpretation at 1310 Kitchen & Bar
The Georgetowner’s Cultural Leadership Breakfast Series will continue on Thursday, April 24, with a featured talk by Dr. Beatrice Gurwitz, executive director of the Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum. The breakfast will take place at 1310 Kitchen & Bar, located at 1310 Wisconsin Ave. NW in Georgetown. Admission is $40, with tickets available in advance through Georgetowner or Eventbrite.
Dr. Gurwitz will explore how the museum presents Jewish American history in the context of Washington, D.C., and reflect on the broader role of culture-specific museums in today’s society. Attendees will gain insights into how the museum engages diverse audiences with stories from the Jewish experience in the nation’s capital.
The Capital Jewish Museum officially opened in June 2023 as part of the expansive Capitol Crossing development, a seven-acre project that reconnected neighborhoods divided by I-395. At the heart of the museum is Washington, D.C.’s oldest purpose-built synagogue, originally dedicated in 1876, which was relocated and integrated into the museum complex.
Dr. Gurwitz assumed leadership of the museum in September 2023, following interim director Ivy Barsky. She brings a strong academic background to her role. Her research has focused on Jewish and other ethnic communities in Latin America, and she is the author of the book Argentine Jews in the Age of Revolt. Prior to joining the museum, she served as deputy director at the National Humanities Alliance. Dr. Gurwitz holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.A. from Wesleyan University.
The event on April 24 will begin with a light buffet breakfast at 8:30 a.m., followed by Dr. Gurwitz’s presentation from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.
